End Alaska Daylight Savings TIme

Letter to the Editor in March 6 Anchorage Daily News

Insanity of daylight-saving time in Alaska must come to an end

Darlene Dubay's Compass piece about February in Alaska mentioned the natural gain of daylight that she notices ("Julia, you just don't appreciate the wonders of February," Feb. 26). I also appreciate the gentle nudge to my circadian rhythm in late winter and early spring as we gain several minutes of daylight each day.

However, in Juneau, a few powerful legislators are not into a gentle nudging of anything, including your gradual adjustment to hours of daylight and darkness. Again, at 2 a.m. on Sunday, they will demand that you change your clock by one hour so that we, who live in the "land of the midnight sun," can participate in the insanity of daylight-saving time.

Since 1999 legislation to end the use of DST has been defeated by individual committee chairmen on four occasions. The last two "actors" to kill repeal legislation were Sen. Con Bunde (refused to hold a single hearing on SB 120, 2005-2006) and Rep. Kevin Meyer (canceled hearing on HB 176).

In 2006, several of us Alaskans pursued an initiative petition. Thousands of Alaskans did sign the initiative petition. However, with only volunteer help and limited funding, we could not participate effectively in the current initiative process.

More about this issue, including the legislative history, is available at our Web site. You can Google "End Alaska Daylight Saving Time."
